Before and after breast reconstruction revision from a contracted implant to a DIEP flap. This 61 year old woman had breast cancer in her 40s and was now a 20 year breast cancer survivor.

Her right implant for reconstruction had been operated on multiple times for recurrent contracture, as she was DONE. She had a significant animation deformity from partial submuscular placement of her implants that also was causing physical discomfort when she exercised.

She had an implant on the left that she liked the look of, but wanted to be a little smaller than her current augmented size. She had enough abdominal tissue for one breast reconstruction, which was perfect for her.

Both implants were removed and her pectoralis major muscles were returned to her chest wall. Her right breast was reconstructed with a DIEP flap. A new smooth round silicone gel breast implant was placed on the left for symmetry.

Follow up photos are shown 3 months after surgery. Her scars have started to mature and her healing is ongoing. Even better symmetry will be appreciated at one year as swelling resorbs and everything settles further.
