Before and after delayed breast implant reconstruction in a 42 year old breast cancer survivor. She had previously undergone bilateral nipple-sparing mastectomy and implant reconstruction. Unfortunately, her right breast implant had to be removed due to infection.

The skin of the right chest is expectedly swollen and puckered with the appearance of “peau d’orange” (in French, “skin of an orange”). This is very common after a severe infection. Generally, we wait 6-12 months after an implant is removed (explantation) before reinserting a new implant to allow this swelling (“edema”) to resolve.

A delayed implant reconstruction was performed on the right side to match the left. Follow up photos are shown at one month after surgery. She has regained her body image and is now able to move on with her life!
