Before and after right breast implant reconstruction and liposuction of the bilateral axillary rolls in a healthy 70-year-old woman with right Poland Syndrome. She only recently learned that her congenital chest wall and breast asymmetry had a name, and that it happened during her development in utero.
Poland Syndrome affects development of the breast, chest muscles and ribs on one side of the body. Her ribs were caved in, and she had a depression of her upper chest on the right, in addition to a smaller breast on that side. She felt strongly that she did not want surgery on the left breast but wished to have better symmetry so that bras would fit better and not pull to her left larger side.
An implant was used for her right breast reconstruction. A smooth round low profile silicone gel breast implant was placed on top of the ribs, in the subglandular position. She did not have a normal pectoralis major muscle on that side – but we prefer to put implants on top of the muscle as our standard of care anyway!
Liposuction removed fat from her armpits and bra rolls to complement her procedure. Follow photos are shown 2 years after surgery. She is very pleased with her decision to finally have breast reconstruction in her seventies!
