Before and after bilateral breast reduction in an 18-year-old woman with severe autoimmune disease. She had true macromastia – dense, heavy breasts that were out of proportion to her body and which limited wearing clothes, activities of daily living and caused pain in her neck, shoulders and upper back.

She had considered a breast reduction since she started puberty at age ten. She was finally ready over her first summer home from college. Unfortunately, her autoimmune condition flared after surgery, resulting in delayed healing of most of her incisions. She eventually healed by secondary intent with months of wound care and an overabundance of emotional support.

She required a breast revision a couple of years after her breast reduction with involved medical tattoo of her nipples and areolas and liposuction of her bra roll. Follow up photos are shown 8 months after her revision procedure with bright areola tattoo that will gradually fade over the next several years and smaller breasts that remain proportional to the rest of her body.

Our office no longer offers medical tattoo – we now refer out to local medical tattoo artists who are experts in three-dimension shading and nipple-areola reconstruction after breast cancer treatment.
