Before and after right lumpectomy and reconstruction by the breast reduction and lift method with liposuction of the axillary rolls in a 46-year-old woman with breast cancer. She did not want or need a mastectomy and was a candidate for a breast reduction and lift even before her breast cancer diagnosis.
A combined breast oncology excision and reconstruction surgery was planned, with additional “margins” (portions of tissue around the breast cancer site) taken by the breast surgeon at the time of axillary lymph node dissection to lessen the likelihood that any cancer cells would be left behind.
Her reconstruction included a “local tissue rearrangement” on the right with a balancing breast reduction and lift on the left. Slightly more tissue was removed on the left side to account for anticipated radiation-related right breast shrinkage after treatment. Liposuction removed excess fat from her armpits and bra rolls to balance out the excisional portion of the surgery.
Early follow up photos are shown 1 month after surgery. She is ready to begin radiation therapy, and did not need chemotherapy. We will see her at the end of radiation, six months after that, and annually for several years to evaluate radiation changes and breast symmetry in the long term.
