Before and after bilateral breast augmentation and liposuction of the axillary rolls in a 68-year-old woman. When we met, the first question she asked was “am I too old for a boob job?” After we laughed, she was told that Plastic Surgery does not have an age limit, but patient safety is always considered as our first priority. She was planning to retire very soon and wanted to do finally something for herself, since she had spent her career taking care of others in her career.
As long as a patient is healthy (mentally, emotionally and physically), fully informed about the procedure, has a comprehensive understanding of the risks and benefits, alternatives to the procedure, expected outcomes and potential complications of surgery, it is reasonable to proceed with breast augmentation. This process is called “informed consent” and is a vital part of the consultation and preoperative visit.
She had lost some weight and wished to have better upper pole fullness, without the need to wear a pushup bra. She wanted to maintain a very natural look to her breasts. She also had enlarged nipples – and was a candidate for a nipple reduction – but they did not bother her.
For her surgery, smooth round silicone gel breast implants were placed on top of the muscle, in the subglandular position. Liposuction permanently removed excess fat from her armpits and bra rolls – over a liter and a half was removed!
Follow up photos are shown 6 weeks after surgery. The swelling of her bra rolls is still resolving. Because we use drains, she had minimal breast swelling and was able to appreciate her results within a few weeks. She achieved her results and is fully enjoying her retirement now!
