Before and after umbilicoplasty in a 68-year-old woman. At the age of four, she had a hernia repair that resulted in loss of her belly button. She was having a breast cancer reconstruction and was thrilled to learn that her belly button could be reconstructed at the same time.
An umbilicoplasty created a “neo-umbilicus” (brand new belly button) since her old belly button had been completely obliterated. Local flaps created the walls of a new navel, and a skin graft from excess lower abdominal tissue that was discarded during a DIEP flap breast reconstruction lined the belly button floor.
Follow up photos are shown 6 weeks after surgery, with a new navel that is healing well. With time, the scars will mature, swelling will resorb, and her belly button will assume an even more normal and natural appearance.
