Before and after left breast revision in a 40-year-old woman. She had developed left breast capsular contracture after forgetting to take prophylactic antibiotics before a root canal, causing the implant to sit up higher on the chest and to look smaller and more narrow. Once scar tissue develops around a breast implant, it hardens and becomes treatable only with surgery.
Left capsulectomy and implant exchange restored the original dimensions of the breast pocket. A piece of internal scar tissue was sent to the Microbiology lab for culture and sensitivity. Her drain was removed a few days after surgery.
A few colonies of bacteria were found on the final culture results, so she was treated with an appropriate antibiotic for two weeks and continued aggressive implant massage to prevent recurrence of contracture.
Long-term follow up photos are shown 6 years after surgery, with evidence that her capsular contracture has not recurred and she still looks natural, proportional and symmetric even years later.
