Dr. Karen Horton and Emily Sespaniak, NP, Featured by American Society of Plastic Surgeons

Busy mom's guide to self careDr. Karen Horton and Emily Sespaniak, NP, were recently interviewed in an article titled The Busy Mom’s Guide to Self-Care: Balancing Motherhood, Personal Wellbeing and Cosmetic Treatments, featured on the website of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a prestigious and the largest professional organization of Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons in the world. They discussed both surgical and non-surgical treatments for mothers to renew and rejuvenate their appearance as a way to practice self-care and bolster their overall well-being.

Self-Care for Moms

As a busy mom of tween twin girls herself, Dr. Horton understands how challenging it can be to balance career, childcare, and self-care. One thing that Dr. Horton invests in to look and feel her absolute best at 52 is to schedule quarterly treatments with Emily Sespaniak, NP, the highly experienced and meticulous Board-Certified Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner at her San Francisco Plastic Surgery practice.

In the article, Emily explains that many women “begin to notice age-related volume loss and static wrinkles” in their 30’s and 40’s, which is also the age that many women find themselves juggling childcare and other life responsibilities. Botox is a popular choice of neuromodulator treatments to quickly and efficiently prevent and address wrinkles. She notes that she often recommends microneedling and non-ablative laser treatments for skin rejuvenation. These procedures can also treat melasma, which is a common type of hyperpigmentation that often occurs after childbirth.

When it comes to a daily beauty routine, Emily advises a medical grade skincare regimen that includes a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, along with morning antioxidant serum and a nightly retinoid to keep skin healthy.

Women face many changes in their bodies after pregnancy and childbirth. Dr. Horton offers a range of surgical procedures to help women feel comfortable and confident in their skin once they have finished having children. Many moms opt for a “Mommy Makeover”, which is a custom-tailored treatment package that often includes breast surgery as well as a tummy tuck and/or liposuction to remove excess skin and fat, repair muscles separated from pregnancies and tighten the abdominal area.
