Plastic Surgeon in San Francisco Highlights Popular Non-Surgical Procedures for Men

Dr. Karen Horton reveals why certain non-surgical cosmetic procedures remain among the most highly-requested by male patients:

San Francisco, CA — According to the most recent statistics released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), men accounted for 10.1 percent of all non-surgical cosmetic enhancement procedures received last year. Of these aesthetic options, the five most popular treatments for males were injectables (including BOTOX® Cosmetic and various dermal fillers), hair removal, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels.

In response to the release of ASAPS’ statistical data, San Francisco Plastic Surgeon Karen Horton, MD says she has witnessed similar trends at her private practice, noting that several of the aforementioned procedures have been in high demand among her male patients as well. However, in addition to BOTOX® Cosmetic, laser hair removal, IPL therapy, and chemical peels, she reveals that non-surgical fat reduction with CoolSculpting® was also frequently requested.

Regarding why her top non-surgical procedures for men were so popular, Dr. Horton explains that each treatment offers distinct benefits to males interested in enhancing their appearance while still maintaining a masculine look. For example, she states:

“In addition to diminishing vertical creases between the eyebrows, BOTOX® injections can also be used to treat male crow’s feet, which are the linear smile lines that extend outward from the outer corner of the eyes. A small amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic can reduce but not completely obliterate prominent male crow’s feet lines, preserving the normal look to a man’s eyes while softening deep creases that contribute to an aged look in gentlemen.”

For men seeking to combat excessive hair growth on the face and/or body, Dr. Horton notes that laser hair removal has proven to be an excellent solution. “For many male patients,” she says, “laser hair removal is a good way to achieve hair reduction in the beard area, back, abdomen, chest, and even the pubic region.” Furthermore, Dr. Horton adds that laser hair removal for men can also help diminish various side effects often associated with excessive shaving and waxing, including irritation and/or folliculitis.

Having little to no downtime following treatment is an attractive aspect of many non-surgical procedures, states the San Francisco Plastic Surgeon, which is something that makes IPL therapy and chemical peels so appealing for men. Designed to target uneven pigmentation, age spots, sun damage, and more, she says IPL therapy and chemical peels for men can be performed in office, and most patients are able to resume their daily routines either immediately or later the same day.

Lastly, Dr. Horton explains why CoolSculpting® remains so popular at her practice: “CoolSculpting® allows men to reduce a fat deposit in their mid-sections and flanks by twenty five percent in a single, hour-long treatment in my office – all without surgery, incisions, needles, or downtime. They lie in a comfortable spa chair, watch a movie on their iPad, get some work done on their laptop, make business calls, listen to music, or have a snooze! During that time, the CoolSculpting® machine is cooling their fat to a narrow temperature range where some of the fat cells will sustain a cold injury and be cleared naturally by the body over the next one to four months.”

“At about one month after a male patient’s CoolSculpting® procedure, he can typically start to see some subtle results, particularly in the way his shirts fit (and hug less tightly in the flank region). At approximately sixty days after his procedure, he can generally see seventy to eighty percent of his final fat reduction, with the ‘final, final’ results achieved by four months.”
