2024 ASPS Procedural Statistics

2024 Plastic Surgery Statistics – New Insights & Emerging Trends

Despite us being in mid-2025, we now have official stats from last year! There’s always something to learn by looking back to see where we are going now…

We are pleased to share key findings from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ 2024 Procedural Statistics Report. This annual report provides a valuable snapshot of surgical and minimally invasive aesthetic trends across the U.S., offering helpful context for patients considering Plastic Surgery surgical and non-surgical elective procedures. Based on data from ASPS Member Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons, the 2024 report reveals how patient priorities are shifting—and how procedures like breast surgery, body contouring, and injectables remain in high demand.

The report confirms that Plastic Surgery continues to play a vital role in helping individuals look and feel their best, even amid economic uncertainty. While overall procedural volume remained steady, demand for certain surgeries—especially those related to weight loss and skin tightening—continued to grow.

Key Findings: Top Procedures Remain Consistent

The 2024 ASPS Statistics Report shows that aesthetic Plastic Surgery procedures remained steady overall, with a 1% increase in surgical procedures compared to 2023. The top five cosmetic surgeries remained unchanged, reflecting consistent patient interest in body contouring and facial rejuvenation. Liposuction continued to lead as the most frequently performed procedure (up 1% from 2023), followed by breast augmentation (also up 1%), tummy tuck (up 1%), breast lift (no change), and blepharoplasty (no change). These surgeries remain trusted options for patients looking to enhance their proportions, restore youthful contours, and feel more confident in their appearance.

These Plastic Surgery procedures continue to resonate with patients who want to enhance their body contour, restore youthful proportions, and address changes related to pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or the aging process. Interestingly, breast augmentation rates increased slightly over 2023, while liposuction maintained its position as the most performed surgical procedure for the second consecutive year.

Reconstructive Surgery Sees Steady Growth

While cosmetic procedures often dominate headlines, reconstructive Plastic Surgery procedures quietly experienced the largest growth category in 2024, increasing by 2%. These procedures—ranging from scar revision and tumor removal to breast reconstruction and cleft palate repair—play a critical role in restoring both form and function. Dr. Horton, who is Fellowship-trained in both aesthetic (cosmetic) and reconstructive Plastic Surgery, emphasizes the importance of these treatments not only for physical healing but also for improving quality of life and supporting mental well-being – such as for breast cancer survivors. This growth underscores the continued demand for comprehensive Plastic Surgery care across all age groups, from infants to older adults.

The Ozempic® Effect: More Lifts, More Tucks

One notable trend in 2024 was the increase in body contouring procedures among patients using GLP-1 weight loss medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy. While these medications are helping people achieve significant weight loss, they also often result in loose or sagging skin, particularly in the face, arms, abdomen, and thighs.

As a result, procedures such as facelifts, arm lifts, tummy tucks, and thigh lifts saw modest but notable increases. These “Ozempic makeover” surgeries are designed to remove excess skin, restore facial volume, and refine body contours to match patients’ new silhouettes. Caution must be taken when planning surgery when patients are on GLP-1 medications to ensure patient safety and avoid postoperative complications – read Dr. Horton’s blog about this topic here.

A Closer Look at Patient Demographics

Patients aged 40–54 accounted for the largest percentage of cosmetic procedures in 2024, followed by individuals aged 55–69. While women continue to make up the majority of aesthetic surgery patients, the number of men seeking cosmetic enhancements rose slightly from the previous year. Popular procedures among men include gynecomastia surgery, rhinoplasty, and eyelid surgery, along with Botox® and other injectables.

Minimally Invasive Treatments Are Still on the Rise

Neuromodulator injections, such as Botox®, along with dermal fillers and laser skin resurfacing, remain top choices for patients seeking to refresh their appearance without surgery. Neuromodulator use increased by 4% in 2024, with 9,883,711 treatments performed. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers were chosen by 5,331,426 patients, representing a 1% increase from the previous year. Non-HA fillers, such as Sculptra and Radiesse, saw a similar 1% increase, with 932,861 procedures performed. Lip augmentation using injectable materials reached 1,449,565 treatments, also showing a 1% rise. Laser skin resurfacing experienced the most notable growth in this category with a 6% increase, totaling 3,703,305 procedures. These minimally invasive options remain popular due to their affordability, rapid results, and minimal downtime, making them an accessible and effective way to maintain a youthful, refreshed appearance.
