Belotero – What it is and why I love it!

Belotero is a unique type of dermal filler, with nothing else like it available on the market in the United States. It is comprised of hyaluronic acid, similar to other fillers I use, such as Juvederm and Restylane.

I use Belotero for filling fine lines, especially in the cheeks and around the mouth. This product is great for people who have “smoker’s lines” or vertical lip lines because it fills in the creases without adding volume. Many patients come to me bothered by the fine (or not-so-fine) lines around their mouth, but they are reluctant to get filler as a treatment because they don’t want “big lips”. This is where Belotero is a big hit!

Belotero is injected very superficially under the skin. It leaves a little bump or mild swelling that should resolve in 1-3 days, and it kind of a “cat scratch” appearance. As the little bump settles into the skin, it fills in the crease to soften the line. Superficial bruising is common but can be covered with makeup.

Belotero lasts about 6 months, which is not as long as some of the other hyaluronic acid fillers out on the market, but it is definitely the most natural-looking for filling fine lines. The number of syringes needed for a treatment depends on the severity of the lines (including depth and number of lines needing to be treated) and the number of areas to be treated. I generally use 1-3 syringes (1ml/syringe) per treatment.

Frequently I will layer this product with other hyaluronic acid fillers to both provide volume to the underlying tissues, then use Belotero to fill the crease and make the more superficial line disappear. I have been using this product for over a year and our patients absolutely LOVE it and come back every 6 months for treatment.
