Improve Surgical Scars With Scar Therapy

Cosmetic surgery procedures such as facelift, breast augmentation and abdominoplasty all require surgical incisions. We understand that some patients are so nervous about scarring that they avoid Plastic Surgery altogether, however, there are a variety of ways that we can minimize the visible appearance of surgical scars. If you are hesitant about a procedure you’ve been wanting due to the potential of developing unsightly scars, learning about scar management may help alleviate some of those fears.

Scar Therapy In San Francisco

At every consultation, Plastic Surgeon Dr. Karen Horton educates her patients about scar therapy for optimal outcomes following Plastic Surgery. Following surgery, all of Dr. Horton’s patients meet with Emily Sespaniak, our Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner, for a post-operative scar therapy appointment. While scarring is natural and part of the body’s healing response, you can rest easy knowing that following some simple best practices for scar management can significantly improve the long-term appearance of your surgical scars.

Post-operative scar therapy typically includes topical treatments, massage, and if needed, laser treatments. Depending on a variety of factors including age, genetics, and ethnicity, some patients may do well with just massage and a topical treatment, while others may require laser for optimal and minimal scar outcomes.

Biocorneum®: Our Favorite Topical Scar Treatment

Once all surgical incisions have healed, we recommend applying Biocorneum, a medical-grade silicone topical containing sun protection, twice daily for a minimum of three to six months after your surgery.
Biocorneum is a uniquely formulated scar treatment that diminishes the appearance of scars from wounds, burns, and surgical procedures and is safe for all skin types. Biocorneum is a clear gel formula that forms a protective layer and works to fade both new scars and scars less than 18 months old, allowing patients to achieve beautiful outcomes.

Scar Massage

In addition to Biocorneum, we always recommend that our patients massage their surgical scars at least once a day for at least three to six months following their surgical procedure. During a scar therapy appointment, Emily will train you on the proper scar massage techniques particular to your procedure. Scar massage will help keep the top layers of tissue from adhering to deeper layers of tissue and forming a puckered looking scar around the incision site.

Laser Treatments To Lighten Surgical Scars

For patients with concerns about surgical scars that remain discolored or dark one year after surgery, we sometimes recommend IPL laser treatments. Depending on the patient’s individual needs, we create custom laser treatment plans that, along with topical serums like Biocorneum, can dramatically improve the visible appearance of scars.
