Dr. Horton’s Breast Augmentation Journey Part I – Introduction

Welcome to my OWN breast augmentation experience!  It’s been over a year since I had MY very first Plastic Surgery procedure, aside from non-surgical aesthetic treatments such as Botox and fillers with our very own Emily Sespaniak, NP.

My 10-part blog series will detail my experience as a patient, a woman and a Plastic Surgeon who made the decision to have surgery myself, which was a significant personal decision.

Dr. Karen Horton in Spotlyte

As a Plastic Surgeon, I educate patients every single day about what to expect with their Plastic Surgery procedures – the risks and benefits, alternatives to surgery, potential complications, expected outcomes, downtime, recovery, and especially about how changing your body will change your body image and the expected adjustment period until they feel “back to normal” again…

Breast augmentation is one of the most common procedures I perform.  I am very particular about the breast enhancement or breast rejuvenation technique I offer to my patients.  Although my patients’ goals become my goals, my personal preference is for a NATURAL looking result, one that is proportional to a woman’s body frame, her curves and that compliments her lifestyle.

I have a particular aesthetic for the breasts, and I hold the highest standards for my patients and the results I create.  It is an honor and a privilege to care for my patients.  I am entrusted with their bodies and safety, their insecurities and body image issues, their goals and fears about surgery.

“Like attacts like”.  I often operate on many women who are just like me – thin, fit, athletic, a working woman or a mother with a natural aesthetic and purposefully elegant/conservative appearance.   I can relate to their fears and perspectives about what they want from a breast augmentation and what they definitely don’t want.   “I don’t want anyone to notice, not even my mother” is what patients often say to me.  And I agree:  only you and your Plastic Surgeon need to know.

I always knew breast augmentation was a procedure I was interested in and would have.  The hardest decision was deciding WHEN was the right time for me as a busy Plastic Surgeon.  Who would be my surgeon?  What style of implants did I choose?  How was my recovery?  Am I happy with my results?  What have I learned that I can now pass along as useful information to my patients?

I am honored to share with the world my experience as a patient and my breast augmentation experience.  Follow my blog to learn more about my personal Plastic Surgery / Mommy Makeover journey.
