Breast Augmentation Decision Making Guide

While the reasons for breast augmentation are as unique and varied as the women who decide to have this cosmetic procedure, we know that there are many questions that arise when considering surgery. With that in mind, the Aesthetic Society has put together a helpful downloadable guide on making quality decisions about your primary breast augmentation surgery.
While Dr. Horton shared her own breast augmentation experience including reasons for seeking surgery, finding her surgery, recovery and results in her blog series, most women do not have her extensive background knowledge about surgery and judgment about how to select the type, style, size and placement of breast implants and how to best prepare for augmentation.
This guide will help introduce you to the various aspects of breast augmentation surgery and the numerous decisions you’ll be required to make, educate you on essential information you need to know about breast augmentation such as risks, recovery, and results, and help you identify your goals and aesthetic preferences for breast augmentation and be able to clearly communicate them to your Plastic Surgeon.

Important Things To Know About Breast Augmentation

Many women have questions about breast augmentation, including whether it’s an appropriate surgery to meet their cosmetic goals. Plastic Surgery procedures in the United States are consistently on the rise, however breast enhancement has remained the most popular cosmetic procedure for years. In 2020 there were approximately 200,000 breast augmentations performed and roughly 90,000 breast lifts.1

Breast augmentation is generally performed to improve the appearance of the breasts by enhancing the shape and/or size of the breasts. Primarily, breast augmentation surgeries are done with implants, but depending on the patient’s needs can also be performed using fat grafting and breast lift techniques and often a combination of more than one surgical technique.

Reasons For Breast Augmentation

There are many reasons why women seek breast augmentation, including volume loss due to pregnancy or weight loss, breast asymmetry, a condition such as tubular breasts that cause breast shape irregularities, or simply a desire to enhance their breast size and create a more balanced figure in women who feel their breasts are not proportional to the rest of their curves.
